The name Charismagic is pretty lame. With that out of the way, here’s a zero review for a zero issue (it’s like a normal review but it’s shorter and doesn’t cover everything).
First off, the art is absolutely beautiful. Khary Randolph draws an awesome griffin (oh yeah, there’s griffins) and colourist Emilio Lopez makes the magic really really pretty, there are these blue ‘force lightning’ effects that light up the whole page.
The world isn’t particularly original, but intriguing (the griffins help). There’s magical guys and normal guys and the magical guys are fed up of hiding from the normal guys and there’s really powerful magical guys and ‘chosen one’ magical guys and they’re all worried about an evil magical guy. I think.
The Las Vegas setting makes a great contrast between fake cheesy magic and actual magic, which I’m sure will be played up in future issues. There’s really not enough character development in these pages, but that’s because of the number of pages (about 13).
There’s a bit in the back of the issue presented as excerpts from ‘Druid Scriptures’, with legends of crazy monsters and magical lands, though at the moment they’re completely out of context. Vince Hernandez has created a whole world, and is teasing us by only showing us a bit of it, like introducing someone to England by taking them in a car with blacked out windows straight to Hull.
Because of the length, there’s nothing more annoying than a zero issue, particularly a good zero issue… Charismagic #0 is annoying as hell. I did fall for it hook line and sinker, but get me a proper #1 and I’ll do a proper review.
Charismagic #0 is on sale February 9th, 2011.
The End.
